TMJ & TMD: How Jaw Pain Can Begin

Your two jaw joints are called temporomandibular joints, typically referred to as “TMJ.” These are the guys you may hear click or pop when you move your jaw, and they can become very sore. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you may have a temporomandibular disorder, or “TMD.”

TMD can cause nasty headaches and even migraines that make it impossible to go about your day. It can also affect your diet, since chewing can become a painful chore.

Your teeth may also not be coming together properly when you bite down. “Occlusion” is the term to describe how your teeth come together when biting. “Malocclusion” is the term for an irregular bite, like an overbite or underbite. Malocclusion can also bring about painful TMD symptoms.

The Trouble With Teeth Grinding

Many people grind their teeth during the day, which is bad enough. But when teeth grinding occurs during sleep at night, that is an actual disorder known as “bruxism.”

Bruxism must be addressed right away since you’re unaware of it and have no power over it. While this nightly grinding is happening, your jaw is being put through major stress, which often leads to TMD.

The enamel on your teeth is also being affected, making your teeth more sensitive to hot/cold drinks. Damage done to your enamel from grinding can also lead to tooth decay.

Solving The Problem & Taking The Pain Away

There are multiple ways Kirchner Dental can finally give you some relief and prevent further discomfort. We want you to come in and tell us exactly what issues you’re having. From there, we can determine how the following options can help.

  • Wearing A Night Guard – We’ll provide you with a customized night guard, or “occlusal” guard, which fits comfortably right over your teeth. It can correct your bite, keep your teeth separated to prevent grinding, and help your jaw relax.
  • Physical Therapy – We may recommend that you work with a physical therapist we know and trust. You will learn easy exercises to prevent your jaw muscles from causing any further pain.
  • Orthodontics – Malocclusion may be the culprit causing your discomfort. If your bite is off balance due to crooked or uneven teeth, we offer ClearCorrect and Invisalign orthodontics. These clear and removable plastic appliances are far more comfortable alternatives to traditional metal braces. They gently straighten your smile and are practically unnoticeable. So you’ll score a straighter smile and feel a heck of a lot better!
