Isn’t it awesome that even in challenging times, we can always find reasons to celebrate?

Thanksgiving and the holiday season is the perfect time to count our blessings and make new memories with family and friends, but that doesn’t mean we can become negligent about our oral health.

We’re here to help. Your Jeffersonville dentist sure is grateful to be your trusted source for exceptional dental care all year long, whether you’re here in our office or are out enjoying the holiday festivities!

Protect Your Teeth This Thanksgiving

Along with visiting us every six months for dental cleanings and exams, your friends at Kirchner Dental are also here throughout the year to give you tips for caring for your smile at home.

Here are some ways you can protect your teeth this Thanksgiving:

Tip #1 – Go Easy On the Sweet Treats

We always like to give reminders about the importance of moderation when it comes to sugar.

During the holidays, it’s especially tempting to give ourselves free rein to indulge in our favorite sweet treats using the rationale that it’s only once a year.

Christmas candy, homemade fudge, cookies, and other desserts are part of what makes this time of year so fun! But going overboard puts your teeth at risk for decay and cavities, so just be sure to limit how much and how long you expose them to sugar over the next few weeks.

Tip #2 – Prevent Teeth Stains

Several of the holiday staples gracing your buffet and drink tables, like cranberry sauce, cherry pie, red wine, coffee, and hot chocolate, contain dark pigments that can stain your tooth enamel. While avoiding brightly-colored foods and drinks is one strategy, who wants to abstain during the holidays?

A more practical option is to rinse your mouth out with water after meals and specialty beverages to not only wash away food particles but also clean out the dark residues from everything you’re consuming between your usual brushing.

Tip #3 – Make Sure You Keep Brushing & Flossing

When you have time off of work, and especially if you travel this time of year to visit relatives, it can throw your whole routine off. That can make it easy to forget to brush and floss your teeth as you normally do each day.

Set reminders on your phone if you need help maintaining a good, consistent oral hygiene regimen when everything else about your days are less than routine!
